On the incongruity between developmental plasticity and methodological rigidity
LIVING ORGANISMS ADJUST THEIR PHENOTYPES ACCORDING TO ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCES One thousand nine hundred thirty six: this is the number of citations retrieved in “pubmed” using the search terms: “developmental plasticity rodent.” The “results by year” graphical trend, automatically plotted, indicates that this number has been linearly increasing over the last 30 years. Therefore, developmental ...
متن کاملOn the perception of incongruity; a paradigm.
Perceiving, for all its nicety of functioning in the dark room under strict instructions for accuracy, comprises a highly complex series of little understood psychological processes. For under all conditions, perceiving represents a resultant of two complex sets of specifications. One set describes the conditions of stimulation. This is done either in terms of physical measures such as wave len...
متن کاملVerbal Perception and the Word Length Effect
Retrieved-context models have played a crucial role in the understanding of serialposition effects in free recall. In this paper, a simple model in that class is proposed and tested against the case of word-length experiments. In recent years, standard interpretations of the word-length effect have been undermined by a series of experimental results, culminating with data that display an invers...
متن کاملThe word frequency effect and lexical access.
Some recent experiments suggest that only open class words show a frequency effect. Closed class items are accessed independently of their frequency. We carried out five experiments to test the validity of this hypothesis for the French language. All our results suggest that the frequency effect applies equally well to the open and closed class items.
متن کاملInterdependence modulates the brain response to word-voice incongruity.
Social orientation (interdependence as opposed to independence) has been suggested as a major cultural dimension. In the present work, we used a specific stimulus-locked component of electroencephalogram and found, for the first time, that the perceiver's social orientation modulates the brain response to incongruity of word meaning to attendant vocal tone. Participants judged the verbal meanin...
